Easy Dessert Recipe: Vegan Deep Dish Apple Pie

Anyway You Slice It, Everybody Loves Apple Pie!

When you've tasted this easy apple pie recipe, made with fresh apples, and homemade vegan pie crust, you'll understand why most people like apple pie best. By the way, in case it matters, non-vegans can't tell it's a VEGAN apple pie.

Deep Dish Apple Pie

Apple pie is a traditional American dessert recipe every day of the year! We make apple pie at Thanksgiving & Christmas, along with pumpkin pie, for those who prefer apple over pumpkin.

Apple pie (or any fruit pie recipe) is heavenly all by itself, but live a little! Try our apple pie recipe with Whipped Cashew Cream, or Coconut Whipped Cream

Makes one deep dish apple pie, 6 - 8 servings.

Besides an oven, you'll need:

  • 9 or 10 inch, deep dish, glass or metal pie pan
  • A veggie peeler, and a sharp paring knife
  • A heavy wooden or marble rolling pin, something like this
  • A sturdy pastry blender with flat blades, not wires. Here's a good example. Here's another one. You can use two knives, or a fork, but it's laborious
  • A couple of large bowls

Apple Pie Ingredients:

  1. 8-10 medium large apples (enough to make 6 cups of apple slices)
  2. 1/2 to 1 cup sugar (according to preference and sweetness of the apples. The tarter the apple, the greater the amount of sugar)
  3. Optional: 1/4 - 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  4. 1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch
  5. 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  6. 1 double recipe Vegan Pie Crust

Directions:

  1. Prepare pie crust, wrap tightly and chill for 1/2 - 1 hour (no more!)
  2. Peel, quarter, and core the apples
  3. Slice each quarter into thin even slices
  4. Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch. Gently stir into apples until well coated. Stir in lemon juice
  5. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
  6. Roll out top and bottom crusts, making the top one about 50% bigger
  7. Place apples in bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, flute edges together, and use a knife to make several steam vents
  8. Bake at 450 for 10 minutes and then turn the oven down to 350. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes
  9. The pie is done when the crust is golden and the contents are bubbling. Insert a fork gently into a steam vent to see if the apples are tender. If the crust is done but the apples are not, turn the oven down to 300 and bake another 10 or 15 minutes, until the apples are tender
